In order to avoid the use of pesticides against aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁)—a carcinogenic mycotoxin produced by moulds—LCA and LGC have joined forces to develop an aqueous plant extract capable of inhibiting AFB₁ synthesis. After comprehensive characterisation, the active extract will be formulated via microencapsulation within natural polymers. This bioactive agent functions without direct contact with the mould, which represents a significant advantage for field application.
Objectives
This project aims to formulate a biocontrol product to combat field crop contamination by moulds that pose a carcinogenic risk to humans.
Expected results
The technology—serving as a biocontrol tool—must ensure food safety while exerting no detrimental impact on biodiversity. The formulation may be applied post-harvest in the field, as well as to maize ears during flowering via irrigation water.
