Utilisation of lipids derived from microalgae grown on effluents for the production of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs)

Context

To achieve a circular bioeconomy, it is essential to recycle organic waste into valuable products through environmental biorefining processes. Certain microalgae are well-suited for such processes due to their ability to grow on organic effluents and accumulate lipids and sugars that can be valorised.

Objectives

The project’s objective is twofold: firstly, to establish the optimal fermentation process for lipid production by microalgae using effluent substrates; and secondly, to optimise the extraction and functionalisation of these lipids into fatty acid ethyl esters through enzymatic treatment directly on wet biomass in a dedicated process.

Expected results

The goal of the project is to obtain products that can be used for various applications, depending on the available fatty acyl chain.
