BIOPHEOL

Biorefinery of by‑products from the French oleaginous sector: from extraction of simple phenolic compounds to their valorisation as bioactive molecules for green chemistry and plant protection

Biomolécule

Context

In France, approximately 6.9 Mt of oilseeds—including rapeseed, sunflower, and linseed—are produced annually. The primary valorisation route is oil extraction, which yields substantial co‑products such as meals and straw. These by‑products can serve as valuable feedstocks for the recovery of bioactive molecules, enhancing the economic viability of the sector.

Objectives

Within the context of biorefinery development, the BIOPHEOL project focuses on the treatment of co‑products via a combined chemico‑enzymatic and biotechnological pathway.

Expected results

Validate a proof of concept for the eco-responsible valorisation of whole plants to produce bioactive molecules with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, applicable across diverse sectors.
