ZYPO

Chemo‑enzymatic functionalisation of recalcitrant synthetic polymers

matériaux biosourcés

Context

The transformation or modification of the vast majority of plastics—whether during design or post‑use—is primarily limited to physico‑chemical and mechanical treatments. These methods are, however, poorly aligned with sustainability principles.

Objectives

The ZyPo project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of functionalising or degrading widely used commodity plastics via the application of fungal metallo‑enzymes coupled with chemical catalysis.

Expected results

This proof of concept could not only pave the way for chemical recycling of plastics—addressing the critical issue of their end-of-life—but also offer a preferred route to access novel materials tailored for targeted applications.
