TC NANOCELL

Production of materials based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) via uniaxial thermo‑compression

matériaux biosourcés

Context

LCA, IATE and BIA are collaborating to enhance the properties and manufacturing processes of lignocellulosic materials by incorporating nanocelluloses coupled with bio‑based hydrophobic molecules, under more environmentally friendly production conditions. The ultimate aim of the project is to develop a material formulation with improved functional performance, conducive to sustainable and economically competitive applications in food packaging.

Objectives

This project aims to develop bio‑based packaging to replace non‑biodegradable plastic packaging.

Expected results

The results will yield a deeper understanding of cellulose transformation phenomena during the thermo‑compression process, with the aim of better controlling operational shaping conditions. This will also support the development of novel protocols for formulating functionally enhanced thermo‑compressed materials via dry processing—characterised by improved mechanical resistance, hydrophobicity, and barrier performance.
