SURBAR

Barrier over‑packaging materials derived from renewable resources

matériaux biosourcés

Context

The project is part of new alternative distribution circuits for bulk-packaged products. Currently, this distribution method applies only to dry products, for which bulk packaging is straightforward as it does not pose microbiological risk management issues and presents minimal product quality concerns. To extend this distribution method to perishable products, one solution is to distribute them in ‘secondary bulk’ by packaging primary packaged products in bulk.

Objectives

The project will investigate paperboard overwrap technologies incorporating bio-based polymers to provide oxygen barrier functionalities.

Expected results

A modeling tool for this concept will be developed based on two prototypes: a high-fat bakery product and a canned ready-to-eat meal.
