SHIVA-D

Water stress, variety interaction and analysis of the biostimulant potential of digestates

Biomolécule

Context

The transition towards a more sustainable circular economy necessitates the valorisation of by-products from anaerobic digestion, particularly digestates, which are often perceived merely as waste. While agricultural digestates are utilised as fertilisers, non-agricultural digestates remain underexploited despite their potential richness in bioactive compounds. Concurrently, agriculture faces escalating environmental constraints, including the reduction of chemical inputs and management of water stress. In this context, biostimulants emerge as a promising alternative, enhancing plant tolerance to stress and optimising growth. Identifying, characterising, and valorising active substances within non-agricultural digestates could address dual challenges: utilising an underused organic residue and providing natural solutions for more resilient and sustainable agriculture.

Objectives

The SHIVA-D project aims to use non-agricultural digestates by identifying and characterising their biostimulant compounds. It seeks to formulate extracts of interest and assess their efficacy on plants under water stress conditions. A comprehensive protocol, from raw material to in planta evaluation, will be implemented.

Expected results

The project is expected to lead to the identification of active compounds in non-agricultural digestates and the formulation of effective biostimulants. Characterisation and evaluation protocols will be developed and validated. A lettuce cultivar range suitable for screening under water stress conditions will be defined. Collectively, these efforts will establish an innovative and transferable dissemination offering.
