FORMULBIO
Development of formulated biosolutions based on essential oils for weed management
Context
The FormulBIO project is situated within the search for alternatives to synthetic herbicides—whose use is ever more restricted due to environmental and health impacts. Essential oils, long recognised for their biological activity, have demonstrated herbicidal potential in previous studies. The principal challenge lies in their formulation in order to ensure efficacy, stability and selectivity. FormulBIO brings together expertise in agroecology and lipid‑based formulation to develop biosolutions incorporating bio‑sourced co‑formulants.
Objectives
FormulBIO aims to develop essential oil‑based biosolutions for weed control by formulating these active substances with tailored bio‑sourced co‑formulants. The project focuses on optimising herbicidal efficacy, stability and selectivity, followed by field‑relevant testing on target weeds and crop species. A comprehensive ecotoxicological evaluation will complement this approach to support potential future use.
Expected results
The project is expected to result in one or more formulated biosolutions that are effective, selective and technically robust. These products will have demonstrated efficacy against target weed species under both controlled and outdoor conditions. Ecotoxicological data will further substantiate their market potential, paving the way for application in the biocontrol sector.
Target markets
Industrials in the biocontrol sector, organic agriculture, transitioning conventional agriculture, and the agri-food sector
Type of transfert planned
Licensing or licence‑option agreements with complementary formulation or validation services, in collaboration with biocontrol industry partners.
