Bio‑extrusion of lignocellulosic substrates: inoculation of fungal strains via twin‑screw extrusion.
Context
Polystyrene is a widely used material that is currently non‑recyclable. Fungal bio‑based materials present a sustainable and biodegradable alternative, especially for packaging. While systems using filamentous fungi (mycelium) already exist as substitutes for polystyrene, these processes must be optimized for large‑scale production.
Objectives
The aim of this project is to conduct a practical study on the development of an innovative bio‑extrusion process, combining twin‑screw extrusion and filamentous fungi, for the fabrication of agro‑materials.
Expected results
This process aims to achieve controlled disruption of lignocellulose while simultaneously inoculating it with a mycelial suspension to ensure extensive and uniform fungal colonization of the lignocellulosic substrate.
