ECODROP

Development of a high‑throughput screening platform for engineering minimal microbial consortia

Biomolécule

Context

Microbial communities play an essential role in most fundamental biogeochemical processes. Surprisingly, their application in biotechnological processes remains limited, because most biotechnological conversions have favoured monospecies approaches.

Objectives

The aim of ECODROP is to develop a novel approach for building simplified microbial consortia that efficiently perform complex functions—rather than relying on monocultures or generating new strains.

Expected results

This project proposes to develop a platform for designing and screening the activity of simplified, functionally defined microbial consortia that exhibit a broad range of functionalities. Specifically, ECODROP targets lignocellulolytic microbial consortia composed of a minimal number of species, deployed within micro‑droplet bioreactors.
