Development of a Continuous Integrated Fermentation–Extraction Process for Anaerobic High‑Titer, High‑Yield, High‑Productivity n‑Butanol Production
Context
n‑Butanol is recognized as a molecule of interest for biofuel development owing to its low hygroscopicity and high calorific value compared with ethanol. However, its high production cost limits its application as a biofuel. A newly engineered E. coli strain, developed by TBI, is capable of producing n‑butanol as the primary fermentation product with a high conversion yield.
Objectives
This project aims to develop an innovative continuous integrated fermentation–extraction process for anaerobic n‑butanol production, based on the E. coli strain engineered by TBI.
Expected results
A four‑fold increase in the n‑butanol production rate.
Identification of the most effective membrane in terms of selectivity and long‑term operational stability.
