Effect of thermochemical and mechanical pretreatment of wheat straw on its performance for conversion into bioethanol and methane
Context
Lignocellulosic biomass must be pretreated to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of cell wall polymers, which is a critical step in ethanol and methane production. Thermochemical and mechanical pretreatments have been identified and will be developed and optimized in this project.
Objectives
The objective is to develop an innovative dry pretreatment process for wheat straw. Its effectiveness will be evaluated based on the material and energy balance following ethanol fermentation and methanogenic conversion.
Expected results
Design of a semi‑pilot torrefaction reactor. The developed process enables:
a reduction in energy requirements for biomass deconstruction,
an increased release of fermentable sugars and subsequent ethanol production,
