The Component presentation

TWB provides a concrete response to industrialists and biotechnology entrepreneurs to develop products and processes from biobased raw materials, from the laboratory scale to the pre-industrial pilot.

To achieve this, TWB works with the best research teams to conduct breakthrough innovation projects, collaborative research and development projects. These projects are carried out within an original contractual framework.

TWB creates new and innovative links between researchers, industry and investors, and responds to the challenge of climate change by creating economic value.

The structure also supports start-ups from their creation to accelerate their launch and growth by offering accommodation and a range of services.

Fields of expertise

Strain engineering

The platform provides a range of services for synthetic biology and genetic engineering projects involving micro-organisms. The team advises, supports and provides expertise for the engineering and construction of microorganism strains, mutant libraries, genomic and plasmid libraries. The platform is equipped with automated systems for carrying out various unit operations for screening and generating synthetic biological building blocks. The high-throughput and/or parallelized tools used can produce up to 1,000 strains per week.

Bioprocesses

The platform provides a range of services for the design and optimisation of microbial culture processes, as well as analytical services and cytometric analysis and sorting. The platform, which includes fermentation, analytical and cytometry services, is equipped to implement and monitor microbial cultures in several volume ranges (up to 300L bioreactor volume for batch production and scale-up studies). One facility is dedicated to post-culture processing (DSP): extraction, filtration and purification of proteins.

Success stories

  • Collaboration with Carbios to incorporate enzymes into the core of plastics to make them biodegradable (THANAPLAST project), followed by the development of a pilot for recycling PET-based plastics with a view to the circular economy (C.E-PET project).
  • Collaboration with Adisseo (SYNTHACs project) to develop an alternative production route for methionine, an essential amino acid in animal nutrition.
  • Collaboration with Amoeba to develop the first industrial process for producing amoebae (biological biocides) to treat water containing microbial films and combat legionella, among other diseases.
