The use of natural fibers in composite materials implies a precise but complex management of quality, relative to the targeted functional properties for the applications.
The first critical step is the post-harvest process of the annual plants like hemp or flax, known as field retting. It can be considered as the first technical stage of fiber extraction, determining also the first stage of fiber quality. This field pretreatment is strongly conditioning the further enhancement of the technical properties of fibers during whole transformation chain toward composite materials.
The presentation will illustrate how a multidisciplinary knowledge based approach can be used to design a robust explanatory model for retting, opening the way to a decision support tool (DST) for quality management of the fibers in composite applications. The complexity of information to gather for a DST, with data originating from either natural and technological processes, will be discussed.
